A team member preparing for a client presentation copied a section of an internal strategy document into a public AI tool to generate a concise summary. The intent was practical, not malicious. The output was helpful. The meeting went well.
Days later, compliance discovered what had happened. The document contained proprietary positioning tied to an upcoming launch. Leadership suddenly had to decide whether this was a fireable offense or a predictable outcome of unclear AI guardrails.

It is responsible stewardship of the organization’s assets.
The Case for Managed Enablement
AI use is already embedded in daily workflows. Banning public tools does not eliminate usage. It often pushes it underground. A more strategic approach is controlled enablement: secure enterprise AI instances, explicit policies, and practical training on how to extract value without pasting sensitive material. When employees understand both the boundaries and the alternatives, efficiency gains can be realized without gambling core IP.
At its core, this is not a technology debate. It is a governance decision.
